Dear JFF fans,

Welcome to the JFF Web Magazine!

Film is a medium that enables us to understand different cultures. Through its powerful storytelling and visual techniques, it has the ability to portray the real lives of people living in different worlds. By effectively reaching out to a large audience, I believe that film has the power to bring together people from various backgrounds, thus deepening mutual understanding.
To facilitate this process, the Japan Foundation has launched “The Japanese Film Festival: Asia-Pacific Gateway Initiative.” With the aim of connecting Japanese fans across the world, the 10 ASEAN countries, as well as Australia, China, Russia and India, will be interlinked through a single network or a “platform.” By accessing our online services, fans from different countries have already been exchanging film reviews and communicating with each other through the common interest of Japanese film. I encourage you to become a part of this network if you have not already done so.

Our latest initiative is the newly launched JFF Web Magazine, which aims to provide JFF fans around the world with a deeper insight into the wonderful world of Japanese cinema.

Though many people across the globe may have experienced Japanese culture through its food or variety of products, it could be said that it is rather difficult to fully understand our culture’s diversity and uniqueness by familiarizing oneself with only selected aspects of it. Of course, the best approach toward a true understanding and experience would be to come and visit Japan — or even live here for some time. But, prior to that, why not begin by watching a Japanese movie or two? Those movies successfully capture and portray the life in Japan from various angles, telling you much about what it is like to live in this culture. By the time you have finished watching a movie, we believe that you will come a step closer to understanding the real Japan.

With the introduction of this ambitious and exciting project, I believe that the Japanese Film Festival has entered a new stage in its development. The Festival now bears a larger mission of building a bridge across the Asia-Pacific region: a mission that will be accomplished by helping people who share the common cultural interest of interacting and becoming friends across borders.

We hope you will enjoy the JFF Web Magazine!
