After spending two hours watching this morality and emotional movie, I knew that I didn’t waste time away. I have never watched Japanese films before and it was my first time. Yet, the movie touched me deeply. It is really a masterpiece. I love the plot that showed an old ill woman who fell in love with An (red bean paste). Even though she got really sick, she didn’t give up on her dream. She has been discriminated in her society due to her illness which is leprosy. People didn’t give her opportunity until this young dorayaki shop owner.

this film is likely documentary- fiction that show how a secret of socialy – politically way of thinking of a story of an old lady sickness which brought up a story/tradition on how to make Japanese's dorayaki pancakes. The opportunity that a young shop selling dorayaki pancakes gave to this old lady is extremely motivate her. It's also gave a meaning of a freedom for a teenagers by encourage them. when the film started, image that shown are all about the human emotion which is clearly about how they felt inside. Most of the scenes are close up which mean what the director showing the meaning of the film. this is one of a good techniques of showing the meaning of the film. Shooting in the real place, soundtrack, and the color of the images giving audience a feeling of a sad story on how people who has that kind of sickness is feel. i was crying while watching this film. it's give me a knowledge and understanding of a point of view from the filmmaker. 15. cynthia より:

I personally think this film has a complete package of moral messages and culture from Japan. First, the story has a comedy in its own way and the acting is really good. Second, in this film I can see how one famous culinary in Japan, Dorayaki is made. Honestly, I want to taste it too after saw this movie. Then, this movie also tells me that nothing can beat my spirit, except myself. Even though people look down on me because of my weakness, when I have a spirit, I can do anything.

However, the most inspiring part in this movie is when I am told to do something that I love. Because, everything that is done with a happy feelings, will produce a good result too. Moreover, this movie also told me to appreciate everything around me, because everything in this world has its own story. We have a freedom to express ourselves, so don't waste your time to do something that you don’t like. Make your life happier. This is what I have got from the movie.

Apart from its cool messages, this movie has one lack. “An” has something missing in its story telling of some characters. For example, the story of Wakana and her family still blur in my mind.

Overall, this movie really gives me an example of a good life. Like a “sweet bean” in Dorayaki, our life needs a process before turning sweet and can be enjoyable. Life must go on, and you must enjoy it to the fullest.

Just because we are different it doesnt mean we are not humans, humans with feelings, humans with emotions, humans with empathy. We are all humans created in many differences and we should appreciate those differences. We can never choose where we are born, what family we are in, and especially what condition we are living in. So let us all appreciate what we have now and also what other peoples have, because differences is not something to look down but too but something to be appreciated. A movie that shows us that many people out there in all around the world are still discriminating other just because of their differences and how we shouldn't treat them so to make the world a better place to live.

Message of this movie is about human itself. That they want to be appreciate (about her health condition in the past), a struggle (how to run a small busines of dorayaki), or an existence of a young girl.

Kawase director direct succesfully in a touchy relation between young businessman and an old woman that still have spirit of live through a sweet red bean paste. He painted how a soul of dorayaki is actually represented through its inner sweeteness. Like samurai and its sword, every life should be appreciated through its soul.

Very so long I have not eaten dorayaki, Doraemon's favorite snack. As a result, while watching the film entitled Sweet Bean, I'm so tempted and wanted to immediately eat dorayaki with delicious red bean paste.Sweet Bean is one of the culinary themed movie that succesful to make the audience tempted by food. Dorayaki making process here described well and detail, especially in process of making red bean paste. From this movie I just know if cooking it is an activity that should be done with love and patience. Red bean paste cooking process itself takes many hours from before sunrise until near the sun is overhead.

The movie itself tells two person of different ages and different views on cooking dorayaki, Sentaro (Masatoshi Nagase) and Tokue (Kirin Kiki). Sentaro feel forced to make and sell dorayaki in a small shop usually bought by school children. He has a large debt by the owner of the store so that he feels a lifetime attached to sell dorayaki. While, Tokue (Kirin Kiki), an old lady, looks always cheerful and eager although she has leprosis. She was pleased when hired as an assistant to make red bean paste. She made it with a pleasure even treat raw red beans with respect.

Conflicts began to rise when there is a rumor about Tokue's disease so that buyers were away. When Sentaro look Tokue condition, her health apparently changed drastically after not working as his assistant.

"An" talks about the meaning of life through sweet red bean paste. Sentaro, who has to run a dorayaki pancake bakery because of a problem in his past meets Tokue, an old lady who applies for a part-time job at his small bakery. Sentaro once in doubt finally decides to hire her after he tastes Tokue's amazing red bean paste. Turns out the new red bean paste attracts a lot of new customers and increases the sales. But not long after that, rumors about Tokue starting to spread and change the condition.

"An" successfully plays with audience emotion with a simple yet strong storyline. The three main actors and actresses perform so well, you can see it through some close-up shots in the movie.

My favourite scene was when Tokue teaches Sentaro how she makes the red bean paste. The scene shows so many details and so appealing. I think this scene successfully represents how Japan is so famous with beautiful details in the making of the country's traditional foods.

  33. vawensa より:

I love this movie because it presents the beauty of the cherry blossom tree in Japan, as well as the enjoyment of typical Japanese food dorayaki which I often saw in a cartoon Doraemon who became his favorite food. From this movie I can know the process of making red bean paste was not as easy as I imagined. The message conveyed by Tokue about life really touched my heart as I am in the same boat as Sentarou which have emptiness in life.

Culinary themed movies have always caught my attention because of my love for food and cooking. Initially I watched this movie I do not think there will be surprises in it, I think this is just a movie about how to create a peanut paste that will help the main character Sentaro (Masatoshi Nagase) creates the most delicious dorayaki but it just me judging book only by its cover, it turns out after watching throughout the movie, I get a movie which is rich in humanity values and philosophy of life. It also portray discrimination against leprosy patients/ survivors in Japan. The movie's plot start a bit slow but slowly become more develop after the conflict arise when Sentaro find out that Tokue (Kirin Kiki) who works at his dorayaki stall is a former leprosy patients. Slowly the background story of Sentaro began to open explaining why he works in the Dorayaki stall.
Cinematography of this movie is great and is able to capture the everyday life of in dorayaki stall in detail, the sentimental feeling of the character, especially in part where Tokue show to Sentaro how to make delicious peanut paste with right technique and how to have dialogue with the beans. Because according to Tokue, everything in this world have stories to tell

Existing conflict turns to rise when the owner of dorayaki stall want to add another variety of food and her bossy attitude to Sentaro. The conflict in this movie is what makes the film attractive. Pasta peanuts here is a cohesive glue for every existing events from beginning to end. At the end of the story the main character is equipped by Tokue cookware set so that he can start over and escape from his confinement

The film's title "sweet bean" store implied meanings, that every one of us has past stories whether it's good or bad but there is always a chance to start over if we want to try.

    Sweet Bean (あん, An)

I had never thought I would cry at a food porn, and the cook is no one but Naomi Kawase.
Currently I'm having a quarter life crisis which makes me confused about how my life suppose to be and feels like I haven't achieved major goals and slowly forget what is my dream and things I really want to do. And Sweet Bean just told me to forget all the burdens by celebrating on small things. It gracefully tells me that I don't have to have a big dream with solid objective, the most important thing I need is passion of something and I will develop it into knowledge, skill and something superior than profession but a way of seeing life and such.
I bet most audiences must love granny Tokue(Kirin Kiki) who delicately and spiritually puts her love into bean paste. Her journey from selecting beans to chatting with customers shows how much she is fascinated by making bean paste and her enthusiasm to share this to others without ego. As a person I don't like Dorayaki as same as the boss in the film(Masatoshi Nagase), my obsession toward the dessert has grown fondly and the film regains my energy to learn and to love new things.
There are a few films which you want to re-watch whenever you feel lost and need a strong push to make you get back on track, this definitely one of them.

The film took me to look closely at the Japanese way of making sweet which is very delicate. Besides the dramatic story of the main characters is truly unforgettable and very inspired, a bitter story though but it blended so well with the sweetness parts.
