Sweet red bean paste is the “soul” of the dorayaki pancakes that Sentaro sells at his little bakery. Sentaro’s bakery is small but it has some regular customers. Sentaro makes dorayaki pancakes without enthusiasm because he is still absorbed with sad memories of the past.
One day, a 76-year-old woman named Tokue comes to respond to his advertisement for part-time workers in his bakery. Tokue cheerfully offers to work for a low wage. Sentaro hesitates because he thinks an older woman isn’t strong enough to work for long hours. However, once Sentaro tastes her home-cooked red bean paste, he decides to hire her. Thanks to Tokue’s red bean paste recipe, Sentaro’s business begins to flourish. Then one day, rumors about Tokue’s illness start circulating, leading to the revelation of a painful secret.
