It is 1964 and the whole of Japan is enthralled by the excitement of the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. At this time a boy is born in Shiojiri, Nagano. His name is Senichi Akita. Capturing first place at a sports rally in his elementary school, Senichi falls under the spell the joy of winning produces within him. Following this, a pattern builds as Senichi keeps placing first in various activities: painting, Japanese calligraphy, fire building, loud-voice competition, fishing, etc. This endless string of wins earns him the title of “Gold medal man of Shiojiri.”
However, after entering junior high school, Senichi meets the first of many-to-come defeats. All at once it seems as if he will never take first prize again. Not one to give up, he tries to make a comeback in high school, which marks the beginning of the roller coaster life to come, one that for Senichi is full of staggering highs and stunning lows. What will to happen to Senichi? All he can do is, as they say: Go for it!
