In 1994, a professional Japanese chess (“Shogi”) player Satoshi Murayama decides to
leave his home for Tokyo in order to fight for the foremost title “Meijin”, despite his
parent’s objection due to his intractable disease named “nephrotic syndrome.”
In the meanwhile, Yoshiharu Habu the arch-rival of Satoshi’s age wins 5 titles
including “Meijin”. Satoshi escalates his bitter rivalry against Habu.
Getting stimulated, Satoshi devotes himself only to the Shogi, not caring his daily life
at all. Therefore, Satoshi wins and wins higher rank players.
Then, suddenly a cancer is found in Satoshi. Though the doctor advised Satoshi to
refrain from Shogi and have surgery, Satoshi refuses it and decides to keep playing in
order to win the “Meijin” title.
