The Japanese Foundation is holding its annual “Japanese Film Festival” in the Philippines on the 4th of July, 2018. The Japanese film festival is a part of the “JFF Asia-Pacific Gateway Initiative“. This Japanese Film Festival of the Philippines 2018, plays a crucial role as this will be the start of such festivals which span across fourteen countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Today we are delighted to announce in advance the exciting lineup of films and schedule of this popular annual event.

We have had the pleasure of holding “The Japanese Film Festival” for over twenty years and this event is becoming ever increasingly popular in the Philippines with an astounding 26, 000 visitors being captivated by this festival in the year 2017 let alone. The 21st “Japanese Film Festival” will take place in five cities across the Philippines from the 4th of July to the 26th of August with an outstanding fifteen films being selected. We are also planning unique events aside from screening these masterful movies.
We will kick off the “Japanese Film Festival” by inviting the young and highly regarded film director Mr Nori Koizumi of the well known three part movie series “Chihayafuru”, to give a special talk at this event.

In collaboration to the screening of “Chihayafuru” and the highly anticipated event of Mr Nori’s talk, we will organise in addition to this a number of significant events.
・The Japanese Film Festival × Cinemalaya × EYES for Embracing Diversity
There will be a panel discussion on issues relating to and surrounding the LGBTQ minorities and the importance of inclusion by Hikaru Toda; the awarded winner of the 30th Tokyo International Film Festivals Independent Japanese Cinematography category.

・The Japanese Film Festival × Manila Note
We are delighted to have the highly regarded playwright, dramatist director Mr Oriza Hirata, of the award-winning play “Tokyo Notes”. Mr Hirata will go into detail and elaborate his thoughts on his masterpiece “When the Curtain Rises”, which is based around a high school drama club in rural Japan. This brilliant work of his is an adaptation of his first-class novel. Apart from our guest speaker elaborating on his movies, he will also talk about and share with us his passion for acting and his theatre stage performance with the Manila Notes project that is the modified Philippines version of Tokyo Notes.

・The Japanese Film Festival× The Spirit of Budô: The History of Japan’s Martial Arts
We will also be exhibiting the history of Japan’s Martial Arts “Budo”. In even more exciting news we are also planning to screen one of the greatest films, “Seven Samurai” by the exceptionally talented Mr Akira Kurosawa.
