The 30th Tokyo International Film Festival dazzles audiences once again The 30th Tokyo International Film Festival kicked off at Roppongi Hills in Tokyo on 25 October. The opening night was attended by 442 actors and directors from the films to be shown during the festival, and these celebrities walked the red carpet to create a stunning opening night. Approximately 1,900 film fans braved the inclement weather to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars, and the venue was buzzing with an electric atmosphere. One of the largest film festivals in Asia, the Tokyo International Film Festival, the Tokyo International Film Festival was first held in 1985 and 2017 marks its 30th year. The film that launched this year’s festival was FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST, a live action version of the popular manga with a huge fan base across the globe. The film’s lead actor Ryosuke Yamada, supporting actor Tsubasa Honda, and director Fumihiko Sori performed an onstage audience greeting prior to the screening. Yamada remarked that he considers the FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST manga a work which is loved by people around the world for its unshakable “Japanese spirit”, expressing his personal rave review of the film. Talk show events for the “Japan Now: Muses of the Silver Screen” special project were also held, starring popular actresses Sakura Ando, Yu Aoi, Hikari Mitsushima, and Aoi Miyazaki. The stars all spoke about their experiences working on the films. Yu Aoi said with a smile that she was glad for the chance to gather with other actors from her generation. The festival was held for 10 days with 200 films screened in total.
